COATED VERSUS UNCOATED

WHITE MATTE UNCOATED

Uncoated paper has a “ Matte” finish because it is not shiny paper. It is a term meant to describe uncoated paper and is different from matte laminate, which is a low-shine paper coating. This premium uncoated stock has a smooth surface, not at all like the uncoated paper you would generally see in inexpensive paperback novels.

WHITE SEMIGLOSS (COATED PAPER)

Laminates are coatings on the surface of your paper labels. Once applied, they create a smoother paper label texture, and give wear-and-tear protection for your prints against scuffing.

• MATTE LAMINATE – For a flat, non-shiny paper label finish, with printed colors that are soft and muted. Generally, colors are duller or “ flat”, with less contrast. Matte coating is forgiving with low resolution prints and provides for a refined appearance.
• GLOSS LAMINATE – Gloss makes your paper labels extremely smooth and allows them to reflect a lot of light, which is why it gives a shiny coat on your paper labels. This paper coating reproduces vibrant colour, and delivers sharper detail due to higher contrast (shadows are darker and highlights are brighter). Gloss also provides some protection against ink scuffing.
• HOLOGRAPHIC GLOSS – Same as gloss laminate, but with the addition of a transparent colour gradient that is only apparent once the surface catches light at different angles

CUSTOM PAPER LABELS SPECIAL FX

PAPER LABELS WITH FOIL STAMPING (METALLIC EFFECT)

Add more depth, polished detail, and lustrous elegance to your custom paper labels with foil stamping. This special process uses pressure to transfer metallic foil onto the surface of your paper label stock.

Choose to highlight specific parts of your label artwork, or foil the entire label to get an overall metallic sheen for a high end look. Just make sure the lines aren’t too thin as anything under 1pt can’t be foiled cleanly.

NOTE : Foil stamping is different from our gold and silver foil labels. Foil stamping does not utilize metallic-looking inks, rather it uses an extremely thin foil sheet and printing plates to create the metallic imprints.

To be able to achieve this, talk to your designer and specify that a new artboard needs to be created. This new artboard must indicate all the areas where foiling should be done, with solid shapes set in 100K (100% Black colour). Label this artboard “Foil”. PAPER LABELS WITH EMBOSSING (RAISED EFFECT)

Add custom decorative touches for a two-dimensional, premium custom label. A metal die and high pressure are used to create impressions on your label, for depth, texture, and tactile beauty.

For a more involved creative concept, embossing as a final touch increases a custom label’s visual premium for prime labels that outshine competition.

Use embossing for crisp lettering or prominent logos to highlight important visual elements. Just make sure the lines aren’t too thin as anything under 1pt can’t be embossed cleanly.

NOTE : Embossing can be done WITHOUT INK—this is called “ Blind Embossing”. This is most commonly done when creating a textured look to the whole label, such as applying patterns and camouflaged borders.

How to Maximize Use of Your Custom Paper Labels

Custom paper labels (uncoated) do not have any laminate or coating on them, which means they are not reflective or high-shine and makes these best for applications that will require finishing touches (handwritten details) to personalize each label.
 

YOUR UNCOATED PAPER LABELS ARE “ EVERGREEN LABELS” THAT CAN BE PRINTED ONCE, AND THEN USED TIME AND AGAIN. Printing uncoated paper labels, for example, with your brand logo and name, is perfect if you are dispensing products in batches and need to have time-sensitive information written by hand on each paper label.
 

IF YOU ARE LOOKING TO SAVE UP ON PRINTING COSTS, our uncoated paper labels are great for stock labels for product labeling use. Print more labels for a nice price break, and enjoy paper label longevity by simply doing away with information that gives away the year or date of your product batch.
 

TIP : An important note that uncoated paper labels do not have any protective coating on them, and this lends to a quicker life span in terms of ink rubbing off and labels getting damaged with moisture. Remember to store your uncoated paper labels in a dry place, not exposed to sunlight, as these labels fade more quickly because they are not reinforced by coating or laminate.
 

Laminated paper labels (coated) are stunning self-adhesive labels made more durable with gloss, matte, or holographic gloss laminate. While writing on laminate is a bit more difficult compared to uncoated paper labels, they allow for a range of label applications that can help you make your products look more professional, more attractive, and markedly custom.
 

DON’T KNOW WHAT LAMINATE TO CHOOSE? Look at your paper labels’ purpose first. If you would like more versatile labels, you would then go for the matte laminate so that you are able to write on them with fine ballpoint pens and markers. Printing labels with images, promotional messaging, or needing a vibrant multicolored logo label? Gloss would be better—its smooth and highly reflective properties will definitely make colors more vibrant!
 

Gloss laminated paper labels are most popular as they are more scratch-resistant and feature full-color prints nicely. Product labels will look more professional and commercial with a fine coat of gloss.
 

Matte laminated paper labels are low-shine, which means they aren’t as slick as gloss paper labels; however these are great if you want more subdued colors with less contrast, for a more sophisticated look and feel. Luxe monogram labels are impressive on paper labels with foiling, but these work well with matte’s natural softness as well. You can also upgrade your uncoated paper labels and print them with matte laminate, especially if your product requires frequent handling. Unlike uncoated paper labels, you get the same finish with matte, but with better wear-and-tear.
 

TIP : Never go from gloss to matte unless you’ve adjusted your print colors. As matte is less reflective than gloss, the same color values will NOT look the same on your labels after lamination. Printed colors will look brighter and more saturated with gloss, while with matte you get darker and duller colors even on the same set of color values.
